Mission feasible: Hollywood in the Emirates

Text: Igor Kuzmichev

In the last few months in the emirates, film crews from Hollywood have not been transferred. RACE ON LUXURY CARS ON THE STREETS OF ABU DABI ("FORCING 7") CHANGE THE FUTURISTIC DECORATIONS OF "STAR WARS" IN THE DESERT NOT AWAY FROM ALL THE SAME ABU DABI. FOR OTHERWAY, THE HOLLYWOOD EXPANSION IN THE UAE NOT STARTED YESTERDAY. WE REMEMBERED A FEW MOVIES THE WORK ON WHICH WAS PASSED INCLUDED AND IN THE EMIRATES.

Mission Impossible: Protocol Phantom

"Mission", as befits a high-tech film about a special agent, was shot around the world: in Vancouver, Prague, Moscow and Mumbai.

The UAE attacked a film crew in the winter of 2011, when the tallest building on the planet - the 162-story Burj Khalifa - was not even one year old. The construction, 828 meters high, became a platform for a stunning scene with the maneuver of the hero Tom Cruise on the mirror surface of a skyscraper. The creators of the "Mission" were allowed to break a couple of windows and occupy several hotel rooms.

At the same time, Cruz independently performed the trick: wrapped in safety ropes, he got out of the room and crawled up several hundred meters up. For completeness of the audience experience, the episode was recorded on an IMAX camera.

Star Wars Episode VII

Restarted Star Wars settled in the desert near Abu Dhabi: this is where a large team led by JJ Abrams has been working since May of this year on the seventh episode of the great franchise. A project of this level and reputation is a major event in the film industry of the Emirates. Both parties - Lucasfilm and local manufacturers - do not skimp on mutual compliments. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called the Emirates "an incredible place", a partner in the UAE, twofour54, believes that filming Star Wars in Abu Dhabi is an indication that the Emirates are becoming a leader in the region's film industry. For reputation and prestige you have to pay, so Hollywood producers made a 30% discount on production services.

All this, of course, is very important, but the heart of an ordinary movie fan is not beating harder from discounts, but from large-scale decorations and objects that have arisen in the desert - a huge tower, a space shuttle and incredible creatures. The shooting area is well guarded, but nevertheless a couple of shots from the site have already entered the network. The seventh episode of Star Wars will be released in December 2015 - you'll have to endure it!

"Genie"

In the history of relations between the Emirates and Hollywood cinema, there are a couple of unsuccessful episodes. Episode One: Director Tobe Hooper, famous for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre horror classic, after a six-year hiatus took up the Djinn project in 2011 about newlyweds who discovered an evil spirit in their home. Funded by "Genie" sponsors from the UAE.

Hooper spent a year in Dubai, engaged local actors, and eventually handed over the finished movie to investors. The advertising machine spun, the trailer was shot, but the producers slowed down the project. There were various reasons for this - for example, The Guardian newspaper reported that difficulties with the release arose because of claims to content that people "associated with the royal family" found "politically disruptive."

The story with the release of the picture stretched out over two years, and eventually the remounted "Genie" was shown in October 2013 as part of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. The press found Hooper's tape “fearless” and “unconvincing,” so it seemed that all the efforts were not worth it.

"Fast and furious 7"

Initially, the seventh part of the high-speed film franchise was planned to be partially shot in Egypt, but the instability in the country forced Universal to abandon these intentions, and in August last year, the upcoming filming in the Emirates was officially announced. In September, filmmakers arrived in Dubai to choose their kind, and two months later, the Fast and the Furious landing force in full force landed in the UAE. Everything went according to plan - the first shooting "Dubai" stage was completed, after the New Year the group was supposed to return back. But on November 30, actor Paul Walker died in a car accident. However, $ 150 million has already been invested in the project, in addition, fans were waiting for the continuation.

Recovering from the shock, the Fast and the Furious team continued to work. In April of this year, Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Tyrese and Michelle Rodriguez occupied the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and a number of city streets. Camera helicopters buzzed, cars rushed one more beautifully; eyewitnesses reported several Lamborghini (however, whom did they want to surprise?). Tyrese, acting on the principle of combining business with pleasure, fulfilled his promise and in between filming recorded a duet with Mehad Hamad.

Times change. Previously, the Emirates were a favorite decoration of Bollywood films, now here you can increasingly meet Hollywood stars. A combination of Middle Eastern exoticism and futurism - the perfect backdrop for blockbusters

"Sex and the City 2"

The second film, a film version of the popular television series, takes place in the Emirates. At the same time, a picture was shot in Morocco: the UAE authorities denied franchise producers the right to shoot in the country. The word "sex" in the title of the film categorically did not suit officials.

The creators of Sex and The City, in principle, had little chance of obtaining this permission, since the first film did not come out nationally. As a result, Abu Dhabi was "portrayed" in Morocco, and there are plenty of blunders that relate to real life in the Emirates.
