Last Saturday, divers from Abu Dhabi and other emirates collected about 1.5 tons of garbage from the bottom of the sea.

An action was held in Abu Dhabi, in which divers raised about 1.5 tons of garbage from the seabed. Divers cleaned the bottom of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, food containers and construction debris.

A cleaning campaign called “Together We Make The Difference” is already holding its second cleaning campaign with divers. This event was organized by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Protection Agency in partnership with the UAE Divers Association and the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club.

The event was held in the capital's Cornish, the purpose of the action was to raise awareness of citizens about the country's environmental protection and the importance of keeping the sea waters clean.

Dr. Sheikh Salem Al Daheri, Executive Director of the Department of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity, said that with the help of such an action it was possible to collect waste from the bottom that would otherwise have detrimental effects on the UAE's marine life, would damage fragile biodiversity and also negatively impact would be in the fishery.

“The community is in dire need of clearing debris from beaches and places for diving. We need to take care of the inhabitants of the underwater environments in order to preserve them for future generations,” said Dr. Al Daheri.

“The clean-up campaign is just one of the measures taken to ensure that seas and landscapes are safe habitats for different species.”

Dr. Al Daheri also emphasized that toxic materials and plastics can not only interfere with normal growth and reproduction, but also have a fatal effect on marine species and ecosystems.
