The new food law will enter into force in the UAE

In order to provide the population with safe food and food products and products, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed AlNahyan announced the entry into force on May 1, 2008 of the new Law on Food and Food Products and Products No. 2 of 2008 (Food Law No. 2/2008) in the metropolitan emirate of Abu Dhabi (UAE). Sheikh announced the introduction of the new law at a conference held in early April at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce.

According to the Director of the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), Rashid AlShareki, very severe fines and penalties will be applied to violators of the new law, including imprisonment.

For example, for importing or trading in food and food products and products that are harmful to health, the law provides for imprisonment for at least three months and / or a fine in the amount of from 30 to 200 thousand dirhams. For the sale of counterfeit food products with the addition of counterfeit ingredients in order to increase the volume of products and sales, the offender will be sentenced to at least two months in prison and / or sentenced to a fine of 20,000 to 150,000 dirhams. Persons who disseminate false information or advertisements or advertisements about counterfeit, poisoned or spoiled food products or that contribute to this will be fined at least 10 thousand dirhams. Persons selling products containing pork and / or any alcoholic beverages without official permission for such trade will be imprisoned for one month and fined from 15 to 100 thousand dirhams.

Director Al-Shareki explained that the new law will enter into force in all metropolitan institutions that trade in food or are involved in various activities related to food products of the Abu Dhabi emirate.
