UAE introduces new law on liability for offenses

The UAE Ministry of the Interior plans to soon adopt a new law providing for punishment in the form of compulsory community service for up to 240 hours for committing punishable misconduct.

The new law will cover such offenses as cruelty to animals, consumption of food and drinks in public during the fast of the holy month of Ramadan, exceeding the permissible limit for tinting car windows, and others.

For some types of misconduct, the new law will replace with mandatory work the current sanctions in the form of imprisonment or fines. The new law will not apply to persons previously convicted of criminal offenses and who are in prison.
