Dubai's second international airport opens in June

The second international airport in Dubai, Al Maktoum International Airport, will begin operating on June 27 this year, the airport’s press service said.

The new airport, which after full opening will become the largest in the world, will begin work with the acceptance and dispatch of goods. When exactly Al-Maktoum International Airport will begin to receive passengers is not yet known exactly.

According to Paul Griffiths, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Maktoum International, the Dubai Civil Aviation Department is already negotiating with several major international airlines to transfer them from Dubai International Airport to Al Maktoum International Airport, located between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in the Jebel area Ali and next to the eponymous free economic zone. “The beginning of cargo transportation will give us the opportunity to check how ready the new airport is to receive passengers. Today we are not tied to any specific date,” he said.

AlMaktum International Airport, after the completion of construction in 2015, will become the largest in the world. It will have 5 parallel runways, three passenger terminals and 16 cargo terminals. Its capacity will be more than 120 million passengers a year, which is almost 30% higher than that of the record holder of our day, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

Recall that Al Maktoum International Airport, named after the ruling family of Dubai, will become the central link in the new economic district - the Dubai Aviation City, which will include free economic zones and traditional economy zones in addition to the airport.
